10 Reasons to Choose EPT

Selecting an Emergency Medicine group is one of the most important decisions you will make, and you want it to be an informed one.  We feel EPT is an outstanding choice.  Born in 1967, EPT has provided exceptional care to the Hampton Roads public for over 40 years. We would like to share some of the strengths of our group, and hope you consider EPT for your Emergency Medicine career.

Outstanding People:  "All of EPT's attendings are handsome and all of EPT's midlevels are above average."  --Garrison Keeler.

State of the Art Medicine:  EPT is committed to providing our patients the best care available based on the science and art of emergency medicine practice.  Bedside Ultrasound has been in use at EPT for over a decae and Video Laryngoscopy is available in all of our departments.  RSI and deep sedation are routinely used.  All of our departments are on an an enteprise-level EMR (EPIC) that leverages information across the entire system.

Academic Department of Emergency Medicine:  There are huge benefits to having an Emergency Medicine residency training program and an academic department of Emergency Medicine, so closely tied to our practice.  Bedside teaching keeps your practice fun and makes you stay up to date.  We were the first academic department of Emergency Medicine in Virginia and the 26th in the nation.  We take the responsibility of teaching seriously.  We have four ACEP National Faculty Teaching Award recipients (Drs’. Knapp, Bono, Graffeo, and Munter), a Council of Residency Directors (CORD) Emergency Medicine Faculty Teaching Award winner (Dr. Knapp), the 2003 EMRA Residency Director of the Year recipient (Dr. Counselman), and the ACGME Parker Palmer Courafage to Teach Award winner (Dr. Counselman).

Niche Opportunities:  Our Group offers opportunities to branch out in emergency medicine.  Interested in ED Administration?  Teaching?  Prehospital Care?  Group Governance?  Seven hospitals, a residency program and over 300,000 annual patient visits provide ample opportunity to become involved in many areas of emergency medicine outside of the clinical arena.

Longevity:  EPT is built to foster longevity in the practice of emergency medicine.  We have had many providers spend their entire careers in our group.  We recognize the needs of younger physicians as well as more senior practitioners.  Partners are eligible for our sabbatical program, which offers significant paid time off during the critical mid-career years.

Location:  Norfolk – Virginia Beach is a great place to live, work and have fun.  There are 35 miles of beach along the Atlantic Ocean and Chesapeake Bay.  If you like the water, there are plenty of opportunities for swimming, fishing, boating, kayaking, or just relaxing on a beautiful stretch of beach.  Downtown Norfolk has several blocks of great restaurants, bars, and music venues.  Old Dominion University in Norfolk provides a great opportunity for watching college football, basketball or attending concerts.  Our beautiful weather allows for nearly nine months of the year outside comfortably.  The mountains are only a few hours away for hiking, skiing, or camping, and Washington, DC is just a three hour drive.  See Hampton Roads.

Flexibility:  Our size is an advantage for scheduling flexibility, and for practice venue flexibility.  Want to work less than full time?  Need a day off?  In EPT balancing your work load with your life and finding coverage "on the fly" is much easier than in smaller groups.

Quality of Shifts:  Our EDs are well staffed with MDs and Midlevels and allow a reasonable pace for providers.  Most providers see between 1.5 and 2.5 patients per hour.  Scribe support is provided at many shops and is growing, with the goal of providing it everywhere.

Democratic, Progressive Group:  Our Group governance structure allows motivated physicians to join our leadership team and help shape group policy and how emergency medicine is practiced in our market.

Sentara Health Systems:  We have a strong, stable partner in Sentara, who shares our values and recognizes what we bring to the table as a group.  Sentara Healthcare is recognized nationally, and has been on the list of the 100 most integrated health systems in the country, as ranked by Modern Healthcare magazine, for the last 13 years.  In 2010, Sentara was rated the #1 System on that list.  In addition, Sentara has regularly appeared on the U.S. News and World Report Best Hospitals list for a number of its clinical programs.  For the last 11 years, the Sentara Heart program has been in the top 50 in the U.S.  All Sentara hospitals use electronic medical records (EMR) with computerized physician order entry and clinical support tools.
